Govt Secures 90% Funding for Mityana–Mubende Road
The government has secured 90 per cent of the required funding for the delayed Mityana–Mubende Road project, a development the Minister of Works says will accelerate construction, ease traffic congestion and bring long-awaited relief to communities and motorists along the vital Central–Western Uganda corridor.

The long-delayed completion of the Mityana–Mubende Road has received renewed momentum after government confirmed that 90 per cent of the project’s required funding has now been secured, raising optimism among residents, motorists and business operators who rely on the highway.

The assurance was given by the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, during an inspection tour of major road projects across the Central Region, aimed at assessing construction progress, quality of works and contractors’ compliance with agreed timelines.

Gen Katumba acknowledged that the project has suffered prolonged delays over the years, mainly due to funding shortfalls that slowed construction and caused persistent inconvenience to road users.

“This road has faced challenges, mainly because of financing gaps, but the situation has now greatly improved,” Gen. Katumba said. “With 90 per cent of the funding secured, we expect works to move much faster and visible progress to be achieved.”

He explained that the improved funding position represents a turning point for the project and should enable the contractor to scale up operations and accelerate construction in the coming months.

During the inspection, the minister directed Energoprojekt, the contractor handling the reconstruction works, to immediately complete and officially hand over sections of the road that are already finished.

He specifically pointed to the stretch from Mityana Town to Naama within Mityana Municipality, noting that opening completed sections would help ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

“Where works are complete, those sections should be handed over without delay,” Gen. Katumba instructed.

“This will reduce congestion, minimize accidents and allow road users to start enjoying the benefits even as construction continues elsewhere.”

According to the minister, overall physical progress on the project currently stands at about 50%.

He appealed to residents and motorists to remain patient, assuring them that government remains committed to completing the road.

“I understand the frustrations caused by dust, delays and accidents, but we are now in a better position,” he said. “If there are no further disruptions, this road will be completed within a reasonable timeframe.”

Once completed, the Mityana–Mubende Road is expected to play a key role in boosting trade between Central and Western Uganda by lowering transport costs, improving road safety and stimulating economic activity along the corridor.

For communities that have endured years of inconvenience, the confirmation that most of the project funding is now in place has renewed hope that the long-delayed road will finally be completed, unlocking its full economic and social benefits.
